Common & Rare Chevy 6.0 Engine Problems

Below are some of the common and not so common Chevy 6.0 engine problems and their possible solutions so that you can equip yourself with the knowledge you need to diagnose your own truck.

Lets dive in:

1. “Check Vortec Engine” Light Problem

The check engine light is a very common engine problem which also makes it difficult to diagnose.

If you are getting this error on your dashboard the issue is likely related to one of the systems your vehicle monitors. Therefore, the following are some initial checks you can do:

1.1 Fuel cap

Your first check should be your fuel cap. Look for any faults, damage or looseness. Any of these can cause the check engine light to turn on.

engine light check - fuel cap

1.2 Fuel filler neck

The top of your fuel filler neck should be checked for debris or damage.

1.3 Vacuum line leaks

Next you should check your engine and beneath the vehicle for any possible Vacuum leaks.

This may be a loose connection or a crack that has formed in any of your cars vacuum lines. Any faults allow more air into the system and may turn on your ‘check engine’ light.

This article on finding Vacuum leaks can assist you and this video goes into detail about how to find and fix Vacuum leaks.

1.4 Evaporative Emission Control System (EVAP)

This system traps fuel emissions and other emissions caused by your engine. It has a lot of components and seals that have the potential for faults as they wear over time. Therefore, this is something worth checking.

For more info check this article on Evaporative Emission Control Systems. If the system appears to be intact at first glance, you should also consider having a mechanic inspect the vehicle and extract any fault codes with the help of a diagnostic scanner.

If you are a DIY kind of person, you can also check out the Bully Dog Tuners which also have diagnostic functions. This may save you many trips to the mechanic therefore, saving you money in the long-term.

1.5 Catalytic converter

The problem could also be in your exhaust system. Specifically, your catalytic converter may not be working efficiently anymore.

In such a case, you may need to replace it which can be costly. It is also difficult to check this yourself. Again, enlist the help of a mechanic if you require it.

Check Engine light conclusion:

With the Check Vortec engine light, it is always going to be difficult to determine what the exact cause is. The sensors in newer cars are very comprehensive and can monitor a lot of components so it becomes even more difficult to diagnose.

Therefore, the above list should give you some things to check but it is not an exhaustive list. Based on your personal expertise you may want to get in touch with an expert mechanic who has experience in troubleshooting Chevy 6.0 engine problems.

The problem could be something simple, like replacing a leaky fuel cap but it could also be something more difficult or expensive.

Therefore, you cannot ignore that annoying little light and its best to take action sooner rather than later.

2. “Reduced Engine Power” Warning Light

This type of problem could have multiple causes but with the Chevy 6.0 vortec engine it may arise due to a defective or flawed throttle body.

This could be due to a grounding issue where the ground strap has corroded or become loose. Furthermore, there may be an accumulation of dirt or carbon, faulty wiring.

Therefore, it is a good idea Inspect the throttle body for the following:

  • Grounding strap
  • Throttle body vacuum lines
  • Wiring - the connection between the electronic control module and the throttle actuator
  • Dirt or carbon build up (unlikely to be the cause but not impossible)

Also, ensure that there are no physical damages to the throttle body.

If you have one, make use of a code reader or scan tool to inspect the codes on the computers of the vehicle. You can use these codes yourself to diagnose the issue or you can provide the codes to an expert mechanic. With this information they can will know where to start to diagnose and fix the problem.

If it looks like you are going to have to replace it. This might be a good time to switch to a larger diameter throttle body which will actually increase your cars horsepower (find out more at this link).

This article on Chevy throttle body problems will provide more detail.

3. “Low Oil Pressure” Warning Light

3.1 Sudden Loss of Oil Pressure

This another one of the common Chevy 6.0 Engine Problems. This video will give you insight into this problem.

3.2 Other Chevy 6.0 Oil Pressure Problems and Solutions

Low oil pressure

A check engine light due to low oil pressure is a common complaint in GM (General Motors) vehicles years 2007-2016 that have V8 engines. It is also known as DOD (displacement on demand). The symptoms occur with no engine-related noises during a low oil pressure condition.

Here are possible solutions:

Some technicians say to replace the oil pressure sensor. If this does not solve the issue we may have to dig deeper.

The next step would be to try completely draining and replacing the oil as well as replacing the oil filter.

If this fails This fails, and the vehicle is sent for evaluation to the dealer. Here the technician replaces the filter screen and the oil pressure sensor, eliminating the message of low oil pressure.

Incorrect installation of the lubricant and aftermarket oil filter

You may have recently gotten a lube service where your oil was changed and your oil filter was replaced and now you are having oil pressure problems.

You are now being told by your dealership or mechanic that the oil and aftermarket oil filter where installed incorrectly and the blame is being shifted to the Company that performed the lube service.

You’re angry because you feel that you got duped and deserve compensation for this extra cost you’re now going to incur.

Well, don’t be too hasty.

There is a screen that acts as a filter for your cars valve-lifters especially, GM (general Motors) engines with Active Fuel Management (AFM).

This screen can get filled with sludge or debris, restricting the oil supply causing a low oil pressure message. The filter screen aims to filter the oil and to control contamination both of which have a negative impact on AFM hydraulic system.

GM has identified the vehicles that feature AFM and are the potential candidates for low oil pressure message. They have indicated that cleaning the filter screen or replacing it is the right solution.

So, check this first before having a shouting match with your lube service company…

4. Used Vortec Engines Issues

A used 6.0 Vortec engine in a Chevy vehicle that has been maintained well will generally serve a new owner quite well.

However,

unless you know about its history well, some issues might arise and catch you by surprise.

Overheating is one such problem. This is more of a thermostat or radiator problem than an engine problem but these are worth looking out for.

A good check to make it whether the radiator is the correct match for your car. There are cases where the cars entire engine has been replaced with a different model.

This can cause confusion and incompatibility of parts. Therefore you or a previous owner could have installed the incorrect radiator or thermostat.

If your Chevy engine is old, perhaps a bit worn, you are experiencing issues and you have a good level of mechanical know-how… you may want to consider doing an an engine overhaul.

Engine overhaul…sounds daunting, I know.

But there are engine overhaul kits made specifically for Chevy engines that are worn. These can have a massive impact on the engines life and performance. Especially if your engine is previously used.

5. Difficulty Starting Engine

Chevy 6.0 engines usually have issues in starting up during the cold months, particularly when the temperature is close to freezing point.

Your car will struggle to start due to the cold because:

  • Increased engine oil viscosity
  • Battery current is reduced
  • Moisture can get into the fuel line and freeze (rare but possible)
  • If you have a carburetor, these are easily clogged with ice

This article will help you with getting your car to start during the cold months.

Cold may be the problem but not in every case…

When it comes to the Chevy 6.0 Vortec engine, the problem might have something to do with the automatic choke. If the choke plate gets stuck your car will have difficulty starting as it will not be getting the air into the carburetor.

If you smell gasoline coming from the car’s engine compartment when trying to start you car then a stuck choke could be the problem. .

In such a case, you have to gain access to the choke plate/valve by removing housing and air filter of the carburetor and check if it is able to open and close.

If it is stuck, you will need to clean it with carburetor cleaner to loosen it up. See the full steps of this process in this article on checking the choke of a carbureted engine.

6. Clicking/Tapping Valves

If your car has been sitting for a while or you have not started your engine for too long, it may product clicking or tapping sounds from your cars upper valvetrain.

This will be noticeable when your car is started and especially, when you rev the engine.

This can be caused by low oil pressure, valve lash or parts that have become worn or damaged. This article on diagnosing engine sounds will help diagnose and fix these issues.

A final possible reason for clicking or tapping sounds is due to the blockage of the oil galleys.

In such cases, the galleys have to be cleared and you may need to replace the oil pump. This is an instance where you should definitely enlist the help of an experienced mechanic to assist you in repairing your engine.

7. Other odd noises

While odd noises from engines are normal at times it can also be difficult to distinguish between noises that are normal and those that require immediate attention.

Futhermore, in some cases the sound might be normal but just plain annoying.

Such a case could occur if your vehicle has aluminium head, produces 335 hp or more and is using a camshaft that was originally designed to match the Chevrolet ZZ3 350 Vortec engine.

Tapping sounds have been known to occur in such engines and are produced by the camshaft. The camshaft has actually had to be slightly tweaked with newer iterations of vehicles to make sure that it could function with engines that produce higher horsepower.

A final note on unidentifiable engine sounds:

While you might like to ignore such sounds, given that strange noises from inside cars are quite common, it is better to give them due consideration.

Even if they sound or seem harmless, it may be worth just chatting to a trusted mechanic about it to get their input. It may save you from massive headaches in the long-run.

8. Misfiring Engine

A misfiring can occur in your Chevy 6.0 engine due to various reasons.

To understand how a misfire could occur, we need to understand the requirements for combustion.

In an engine, three components are needed for combustion:

  • Oxygen
  • Fuel
  • A spark

This is an oversimplification of the process and it there is more than 1 type of combustion in car engines but essentially if something goes wrong with any of the above components you can get misfiring of pistons.

If take that as our point of investigation we should think about the following components and problems:

  • Spark problems - caused by old/worn/damages Spark plug or weak ignition coil
  • Imbalanced fuel/air mixture - fuel injectors that are clogged, dirty or have air leaks could be the cause

These are not the only two cause but they are a good place to start looking. If you are still at a loss don’t leave it be.

Driving with a misfiring engine is not a good idea. It can both damage your engine, cause greater emission, diminish fuel efficiency and a sudden loss of power like that cause accidents.

This is a know issue with various Chevrolet models so be careful and don’t brush it off.

9. Chevy 6.0 Vortec Engine Shutting Off

If your engine just shuts off without warning and will not start again, this is indeed call for alarm.

This is frustrating and sometimes costly, depending on the problem.

Luckily, this problem is uncommon with Chevrolet 6.0 Vortec engines but if it does occur, here are some things to do before calling the tow truck:

  • Make sure it is not just a lack of fuel or dead battery issue. If your engine is no longer turning when you turn the key your battery may just be dead.
  • Make sure your engine didn’t overheat
  • Sometimes, it juts need time. Give your car 10 minutes and try again. While it might start, something harmful is going on behind the scenes so it may be time to take it to a mechanic.

I feel like I am punting this pretty hard but if the above does not help you, get your car to a good mechanic.
