Cleaning the fuel pressure regulator in your vehicle is one thing you can do to keep your car running smoothly. Step One: Remove Power From the Pressure System 

First of all, remove the fuel pump fuse from the fuse box. Doing so will ensure that there is no power going to the fuel pressure. This an essential part, especially for the fuel lines in fuel injection systems. Otherwise, pressurized fuel may squirt out and injure someone. 

You are going to want to try and start the car a few times. The car will run at first but eventually run out of power and stop when the fuse isn’t directing energy to the fuel pressure system. 

Step Two: Release Fuel System Pressure

Next, remove the gas cap from the car to equalize pressure in the fuel tank. This gas cap removal will ensure that any excess force from that area releases via the now open gas cap.

Step 2: Removing the Retaining Bracket and Remove the O-Ring

The retaining racket is typically connected using a screw or a clip. Your owner’s manual will provide the details, but removing the screw/clip will allow you to remove the retaining bracket holding the regulator to the fuel line. 

While doing this, use a piece of cloth so that you can catch fuel spillage and pull the regulator from the fuel rail. You’ll notice an o-ring there that will likely be dirty. This opportunity would be an excellent time to clean or replace it. 

Step Four: Cleaning the Fuel Pressure Regulator

Once you disconnect and remove all the parts mentioned here, use a regular cloth to clean them. Please make sure the fabric is clean and has no residue on it. Otherwise, you may risk inserting foreign bodies into your fuel system. 

Step 5: Put Everything Back

  • Use a clean white piece of cloth to catch the fuel spillage. You can also use a bucket or any container if you have a stable surface below. Do not hit let it hit the ground, especially if you have curious pets. 
  • Have a mechanic friend on standby just in case you want a second opinion.
